Deborah Ruth views her paintings as narratives that use characters to explore concepts related to the atmosphere of children. She uses small amounts of imagery and text along with her characters to suggest her concepts rather than stating them, that way her narratives are open and can be shaped by viewers. Although her primary medium is oil paint, she will often use embroidery, paper and other materials in her art if she feels it can better convey the content of the piece.
She has a special fondness for embroidery though, as it reminds her of her grandmother's sewing circles where local women gathered to sew, chat and share information. Not only is her art influcened by her own childhood but it is also influenced by the lives of her own children. She is a very dedicated mother of two always seeking new ways to enrich the lives of her children. Her art and her children are more than intertwined conceptually; Deborah had to take time off for the birth of her first child before finshing her degree in art at SDSU. She has also taught private art lessons for children.
At SDSU Deborah grew as an artist under the tutalage of Richard Baker, who she still keeps in contact with today.
